Antiseptics are medications, which have antimicrobial properties and mainly are meant for local use on skin and mucous membranes. They are extremely different in chemical structure, physico-chemical properties and antimicrobial activity. The effectiveness of antiseptics depends on sensitivity of microorganisms to them, substance concentration, temperature, length of action and other factors.
Antiseptics are used for treatment of infected wounds, damaged mucous membranes, for food and water treatment, for disinfection of medical instruments, linens, patient discharge etc.
In contrast to chemotherapeutical drugs, preparations used as antiseptics, they have a very wide spectrum of bactericidal activity. Moreover the secondary resistance to them occurs very rarely.
